Next iPhone Equipped With A5X Processor, 1GB RAM, New Design? [RUMOR]

Ever have an app lag on you? While the iPhone 4S is downright zippy, smartphones can always be more powerful. New Android phones on the market already outperform the six-month-old iPhone. How will Apple respond in the never-ending arms race of features and specs? 9To5Mac has a leak on the next generation of iPhones.

Reportedly, Apple has built test units in iPhone 4S cases that feature processors based on the A5X chips used in the new iPad. As with the iPad 3, the prototypes are currently running on 1GB of RAM. While the prototype units are supposedly built inside iPhone 4S cases, 9To5Mac claims that these are only test units and the next generation of iPhone will feature a different design. The site hasn’t divulged its source, so take this rumor with a grain of NaCl. Last July, the site reported multiple times that the current iPhones would be thinner and wider—we now know that the iPhone 4S is nearly identical to the phone before it.
As for the next iPod, the rumors are a little more solid but less juicy. 9To5Mac noticed a reference to a next generation iPod within the iOS 5.1 firmware. It’s likely that the next iPod is being tested, but no specs have been hinted as of yet.

While these are not earth-shattering rumors and details, (“Apple’s going to update the iPhone? What a surprising development!”) it is interesting to hear where Apple currently is with their prototypes andfirmware support.

What sort of features would you like to see from the next iPhone? Personally, I am more concerned with battery life than with clockspeed and RAM—6 constant hours of Angry Birds isn’t enough for me. Let us know what you think in the comments.

Tethered Jailbreak For Non-A5 Devices On iOS 5.1 Released By iPhone Dev-Team, Download Now [RedSn0w 0.9.10b6]

Apple released iOS 5.1 midst the new iPad launch yesterday, to which there was no jailbreak available. However, that has all changed now, as the iPhone Dev-Team have releasedRedSn0w 0.9.10b6 to jailbreak iOS 5.1. There’s one small problem though, this is a tethered jailbreak, which means that you will have to connect your iOS device to your computer every time you want to reboot.
The iOS 5.1 tethered jailbreak is only for non-A5 devices, which means that it will only work with theiPhone 3GSiPhone 4iPod Touch 3GiPod Touch 4G and iPad 1. The iPad 2, the new iPad and the iPhone 4S are not supported. Also, if you want to preserve your baseband for unlock, then you should create a custom iOS 5.1 ipsw firmware and then get on with the jailbreak. Read more below:
Update #1:  First, please read and re-read the above warnings!  With all of that in mind, we realize that some of you non-A5 jailbreakers are itching to get to 5.1, even though there seems to be no compelling new feature there. Because of geohot’s limera1n exploit, those with devices earlier than the iPad2 can test the 5.1 jailbreak waters if they really want to, using redsn0w 0.9.10b6.  Here’s what you need to know:
  • This is a *tethered* 5.1 jailbreak for non-A5 devices.  You’ll need to use redsn0w to “Just Boot” your device every time it power cycles, otherwise jailbreak apps won’t work (neither will Safari).
  • If you use ultrasn0w for your carrier unlock, be sure to use a custom IPSW to get to 5.1 first!  Don’t ever restore to a stock Apple IPSW!  Use redsn0w’s “Custom IPSW” button to create a NO_BB_* version of the 5.1 IPSW and restore to that instead of the stock one.  (That option is available only to 3GS and iPhone4-GSM owners.)  ultrasn0w itself will be updated for 5.1 in the next few days (same baseband support, not 5.1’s baseband).
  • If you’re lucky enough to have an old-bootrom 3GS, this jailbreak is actually untethered (redsn0w will figure that part out automatically).
  • While we were at it, we added @pod2g’s steaks4uce exploit to support MC models of the iPod touch 2G (whose last firmware was 4.2.1).  So now redsn0w will auto-detect and jailbreak both MB and MC versions of that older device.
  • iBooks won’t work until a future update of redsn0w
If you are interested in downloading RedSn0w 0.9.10b6 you can download it from the iJailbreak Downloads Section. Additionally you can use one of the download links below:
Download RedSn0w 0.9.10b6 for Mac OS X
Download RedSn0w 0.9.10b6 for Windows

Siri ported to an iPhone 4, old phone learns a new trick (Update: Better performance!)

Apple's iPhone 4 may not have the fancy dual core CPU of its successor, but thanks to the efforts of developer Steven Troughton-Smith and the folks at 9to5 Mac, it may soon have Siri. The port of thesultry voice assistant was accomplished by using the 4S Siri and Springboard files, and some serious elbow grease, no doubt. As you can see in the video below, it's far from perfect, but it can recognize spoken commands without issue. Currently, the hack is missing an iPhone 4 GPU driver that keeps things running buttery smooth on the elder phone, and Cupertino won't authenticate Siri's commands coming from it either. So, it isn't quite ready for primetime, but it should only be a matter of time before all you iPhone 4 owners can tell Siri what to do, too.

Update: And in the space of just a few hours, Mr. Troughton-Smith has already managed to improve performance of the app on the iPhone 4 significantly, although Apple's servers are still unreachable. Check out a newer YouTube video showing off some seriously smooth scrolling action after the break. [Thanks, Ramzi]

Apple unveils iPhone 4S with dual-core CPU and 8MP camera

Apple just unveiled the newest member of its iPhone lineup of smartphones. Dubbed the iPhone 4S, the latest offering by the Cupertino-based company is more of an incremental upgrade than a complete overhaul of the iPhone 4. Design and dimensions stay the same, but there's a notable increase in processing power.

The Apple iPhone 4S comes with the A5 chipset, which is the SoC that powered the iPad 2. It comes with a dual-core Cortex-A9 CPU and PowerVR SGX543MP2 GPU, which as we know is a pretty powerful combo.

The new iPhone 4S comes with the A5 chipset
The Apple iPhone 4S also improves on the network data speeds of its predecessor. It's not the LTE everyone was hoping for, but 14.4 Mbps is still pretty good for most market. More importantly, however, the iPhone 4S is a true world phone, supporting both GSM and CDMA networks.

The 4S features both GSM and CDMA connectivity
The other major upgrade that the Apple iPhone 4S brings is in the camera department. The 5 megapixel shooter of its predecessor has been replaced by an 8 megapixel unit and the video recording has been upgraded from 720p to 1080p.

8MP camera with 1080p video capture
Much like its predecessor, the iPhone 4S will come in black and white color versions (only this time the white one will be available from day one). However there will be three storage options this time - a larger 64GB edition will join the 16GB and 32GB ones.
The iPhone 4S pre-orders will start on October 7, while actual sales begin on October 14. Pricing on a two-year contract is $199,$299 and $399 for the 16GB, 32GB and 64GB versions, respectively.

iPhone 4S pricing and launch date
In the US the Apple iPhone 4S will be available with AT&T, Verizon and Sprint (for the first time). Canada, Australia, UK, France, Germany, and Japan will be the other countries in the first wave to get the new iPhone, while 63 other countries will join before the end of the year.

Apple wants to 'talk iPhone' on October 4th

Well, it's about freaking time! Apple has finally begun sending out invites for its upcoming press conference, and the company's being none too subtle with the hints, offering up some familiar app icons in the artwork and the tagline "Let's talk iPhone." As to whether it'll be an iPhone 5, 4S or some other new formation, we'll all have to wait until the event to find out -- and you'd better believe we'll be there at Apple's Cupertino headquarters to find out.

Report: Apple to hold media event on October 4th, Tim Cook to unveil iPhone 5

We have yet to receive official word on this, but All Things Digital is reporting today that Apple's next big media event will be held on October 4th, where freshly minted CEO Tim Cook is expected to unveil the iPhone 5. Sources close to the situation say Cook will be the main presenter at the event, with execs Phil Schiller, Scott Forstall and Eddy Cue playing supporting roles. This would mark the first time that Cook has actually led an Apple event, adding an extra wrinkle of significance to an already highly anticipated occasion. The site's sources went on to say that the next-gen iPhone will be available for purchase "within a few weeks" of the announcement, though All Things Digital acknowledges that the exact date of its unveiling is still subject to change. As always, we'll be sure to keep you posted as soon as we hear more.

Apple sues Samsung in Japan over alleged iPhone, iPad patent violations

It looks like Apple's patent spat with Samsung has now reached the land of the rising sun. Reuters is reporting that Cupertino is taking the Korean manufacturer to court in Japan, over alleged patent violations pertaining to the iPhone and iPad. Japan's Kyodo news agency first reported the news, citing unnamed insiders who claim that Apple is looking to halt sales of Samsung's allegedly patent-infringing Galaxy S smartphones, while seeking ¥100 million (about $1.3 million) in damages. According to the sources, the first hearing was held in a Tokyo District Court on Wednesday, though a court spokesman would not comment on the pending case. Neither Samsung nor Apple have commented on the suit and details on the patents in question remain unclear, but we'll keep you posted as we find out more.

Update: Ryuji Yamada, CEO of Japanese provider NTT DoCoMo, is now saying that Apple's lawsuit will not have any effect on next month's Galaxy Tab launch. "We have heard from Samsung that there will be  no obstruction to sales," Yamada confirmed.

8-Megapixel Camera for iPhone 5 "News"

According to the report Largan Precision and Genius Electronic Optical “were responsible for supplying the 5-megapixel camera currently used in the iPhone 4”are said to be the chosen suppliers.Orders from both companies combined enjoyed about 27.5% of the global market share last year, thanks, of course, to the high sales of iPhone’s.

According to a report from Taiwan Economic News Apple has secured deals with two suppliers to provide 8-megapixel lenses for Apple’s next-generation iPhone.

It seems that we will hear a lot of conflicting rumors regarding the iPhone 5′s shape, size, and display, but the 8-megapixel lenses seems to be the only the surest feature.
