Google Drive Launched, Officially!

The much rumored Google drive has been made official at last. It will offer 5GB of storage space for any file including documents, videos or photos and the service will integrate with Google Docs.

In simple words, Google Drive is an off-site storage where you can create, share, collaborate, and keep all of your stuff. Whether you’re working with a friend on a joint research project, planning a wedding with your fiancĂ© or tracking a budget with roommates, you can do it in Drive. You can upload, access and share all of your files, including videos, photos, Google Docs, PDFs and beyond.

There are a variety of paid plans available too. You can get started with 5GB of storage for free or choose to upgrade to 25GB for $2.49/month, 100GB for $4.99/month or even 1TB for $49.99/month.

When you upgrade to a paid account, your Gmail account storage will also expand to 25GB.

What Google Drive does is offer you an online storage and basically it could work as a folder on your computer in which all content would be uploaded to your Google Drive. Then you would be able to access that content from anywhere. A rundown of the main features is given below.

Google Docs Integration:

Google Docs integration with Google Drive means that you will be able to collaborate with other people in real time on documents, spreadsheets and presentations. You can share content with others and receive notifications when somebody comments on your documents or files and also add and reply to comments.

OCR and Image Recognition:

An interesting feature is the ability to recognize text in your documents using Optical Character Recognition (OCR). This means that you will be able to search text from scanned documents as well as text from other images you upload. Not only that, it offers image recognition as well which means that you can upload photos and later search according to location.

Smart Tagging:

“Smart tagging” can be used on content on your Google Drive. You can tag content and later when searching, it will show up in your search. Searches can be conducted by keyword, filtered by file type, owner, and other criteria.

Support for 30+ file types:

Regardless of whether you have the software or not, Google Drive can open files of more than 30 types in your browser, a very neat feature. So anything like files from Photoshop, Illustrator or High Definition video will be easily viewable without leaving the browser window.

Google Drive versus DropBox:

Most of the people who are familiar with DropBox will be wondering how Google Drive is any different. Well, there isn’t much difference in basic functionality since both feature the same Drag-and-Drop syncing abilities.

The main difference is the amount of free storage offered, 5GB for Google Drive and 2GB for DropBox, and the set of features Drive offers (given above). The tight integration Google Drive will have with the whole Google universe, i-e Google+, Android, Gmail etc will be a big factor. By integration of all Google services, people will find themselves using Drive more and more often.

Just consider a function we’ll soon have: Users will be able to attach files from their Drive directly in email as attachments.

Furthermore, Google says that it is working with third-party developers to allow users to "send faxes, edit videos, and create website mockups directly from Drive.” But the third party apps currently available for DropBox make a compelling case for it as well. Not to mention that since DropBox has been in online storage for a while and Google just entered the market, the desktop version of DropBox is arguably better than Google Drive’s.

So it would really come down to personal choice rather than a clear cut winner. I doubt heavy DropBox users will flood to Drive. However for users who did a lot of work with Google Docs will find that Drive is a solid product.

Google Drive is currently offered for both Macs and PCs and an Android app is available as well. An iOS app is in the pipeline and is expected to debut in the coming weeks.

You can access and configure your Drive here: https://drive.google.com/start

2011 was a significant year for Pakistan’s mobile industry after it became, by most estimates, the 9th largest mobile market in the world.

Global research firm TNS also revealed in its Mobile Life report that the country now has more than 103 million phones, with some sources placing the actual number of users nearer 130 million. 2011 was a landmark year for Nokia too, as the company celebrated the shipment of its 1.5 billionth Series 40 phone – that’s a lot of phones!

Mobile phones have transformed the lives of millions of people across Pakistan, connecting communities and helping develop both the rural and urban economies. As recently as 2001, the country had just 300,000 subscribers and was a fairly immature mobile market. Fast forward ten years and Pakistan is at the forefront of the mobile revolution in the emerging world.

Today’s top phones often contain as much processing power as a desktop PC did five years ago, and can often do far more, but in Pakistan it is Dual SIM handsets that have been the bedrock of the country’s mobile revolution.

Users are attracted to the flexibility and choice offered by multi-SIM handsets in a market with the abundance of operators and pricing plans.

Historically Pakistan’s mobile users have been confronted with a sea of sub-par handsets when choosing a Dual SIM phone and the market has stagnated in a slew of low quality products. As users have matured so have their demands, with increasing numbers of customers wishing to access the variety of services that mobile phones can offer, from feature-rich applications to online services.

The country’s infrastructure has benefited from increased investment from both the public and private sectors and is now approaching the point when it can start to handle the data hungry demands of the modern mobile user.

In response to these challenges, last year Nokia used its world class heritage in mobile phone development to produce a range of Dual SIM handsets that offer users an intuitive, feature-rich experience at a price that everyone can afford. Intensively researched and carefully developed, Nokia’s technology is designed specifically with the Pakistani consumer in mind, including bespoke features like Easy Swap which can remember up to five SIM cards.

The result was the Nokia X1-01 and C2-00 – budget phones that come with more memory, a better battery life and intuitive SIM change options.

This represented a significant proportion of the 3.3 million Dual SIM handsets that Nokia shipped in 2nd half of last year, and proves that consumers are seeking feature-rich phones at affordable prices.

These innovations, rather than diluting operator revenues, are actually driving Average Revenues per Unit (ARPUs), as well as improving the user experience.

Getting people online should be at the forefront of every carrier’s strategy. The mobile phone industry in Pakistan is one of the fastest growing sectors in consumer goods, and the population has demonstrated that they are willing to embrace quality phones. Research from the University of the Punjab, published in the International Journal of Business and Social Science last year, has shown that the majority of users in Pakistan consider mobile phones a “necessity of life” and will consider almost all features of a handset when purchasing.

The latest industry statistics show that GPRS data usage on Nokia handsets in Pakistan is now well above 40% across the board. Coupled with that around a quarter (23%) of Dual SIM X2-01 users in Pakistan have become first-time internet users, experiencing the benefits of apps, enjoying multi-media messaging and a host of other online activities for the first time.

Personal relationships are growing and communities developing as customers evolve beyond the standard phone calls and SMS into a media-rich user experience. Nokia has pledged to connect a billion people, and this is another step in the realization of that goal.

2012 promises to be an exciting year for the mobile industry in Pakistan. Both handset activation and user numbers are predicted to continue to rise, and more people than ever are on course to access the internet for the first time.

Having revolutionized the Dual SIM market last year with its range of robust, feature-heavy phones at affordable prices, Nokia is planning to build on its successful partnership with cellular operators. Nokia is already in discussion with operators across the country to help customers benefit from affordable internet data bundles, and ensure that when users take their first step onto the mobile internet, Nokia will be with them all the way.

3G Auction Delayed Indefinitely: Reuters

Exactly like we told you earlier this week, Reuters has reported that PTA has delayed 3G license auction for indefinite period, citing Walid Irshad, CEO PTCL and Telenor’s Spokesperson.

It maybe recalled that PTA has issued Information Memorandum in January 2012 announcing that 3G auction would take place on March 29th.

Potential bidders were due to submit expressions of interest from January 21, but they have yet not been invited to do so, reported Reuters in its report citing Walid Irshaid, chief executive of Pakistan Telecommunication Co (PTCL).

“All the dates announced earlier have been put on hold, what the new date is we don’t know,” said Irshaid. “The first step was not even taken yet. No official notification has been received by us or any other operator.” Mr. Irshad was quoted.

A spokesman for Telenor told Reuters that the government had postponed the auction indefinitely until it hires an international consultant to supervise the process.

Apparently the reason delay is said to be appointment of consultant, however, it is believed that cellular cartel had pressurized the government and those who were to take decisions to delay the auction.

It is believed that cellular companies were reluctant to invest in 3G auction and 3G network rollout, which could cost each operator up to USD 1 billion dollar.

Jailbreak 5.1 iPhone 4, 3GS, iPad 1, iPod Touch 4G, 3G with Redsn0w

Jailbreak 5.1 iPhone 4, 3GS, iPad 1, iPod Touch 4G, 3G is now available. As we expected yesterday that the iPhone Dev-team is working hardly to find a quick jailbreak specially for who updated to iOS 5.1 mistakenly. MuscleNerd of iPhone Dev-team has just announced the release of Redsn0w 0.9.10b6 to bring tethered jailbreak 5.1 for non-A5 devices (iPhoen 4, iPhone 3GS, iPad 1, iPod Touch 4G, 3G)
What’s tethered jailbreak :
Tethered jailbreaks require a computer connection to boot a jailbroken iOS device. The concept of a tethered jailbreak has been around a long time, but essentially it means this: every time your iPhone or iPod touch reboots or the battery dies, you have to connect (tether) your iOS device back to your computer so that the hardware can boot with the aid of the jailbreak application.
iPhone Dev-team blog (read carefully):
  • This is a *tethered* 5.1 jailbreak for non-A5 devices. You’ll need to use redsn0w to “Just Boot” your device every time it power cycles, otherwise jailbreak apps won’t work (neither will Safari).
  • If you use ultrasn0w for your carrier unlock, be sure to use a custom IPSW to get to 5.1 first! Don’t ever restore to a stock Apple IPSW! Use redsn0w’s “Custom IPSW” button to create a NO_BB_* version of the 5.1 IPSW and restore to that instead of the stock one. (That option is available only to 3GS and iPhone4-GSM owners.)ultrasn0w itself will be updated for 5.1 in the next few days (same baseband support, not 5.1’s baseband).
  • If you’re lucky enough to have an old-bootrom 3GS, this jailbreak is actually untethered (redsn0w will figure that part out automatically).
  • While we were at it, we added @pod2g’s steaks4uce exploit to support MC models of the iPod touch 2G (whose last firmware was 4.2.1). So now redsn0w will auto-detect and jailbreak all versions of that older device.
  • iBooks won’t work until a future update of redsn0w

Boot Semi-tethered:
What’s Semi-Untethered jailbreak means :
The main issue of tethered jailbreak is that you need to connect your device to computer to use Redsn0w “Just Boot” tethered option every time your reboot your device. Semi-tethered jailbreak come specially to fix this issue, as it allows you reboot your device without connecting it with computer. So now you have untethered jailbreak on iOS 5. But the main issue is that 99% of jailbreak apps and tweaks won’t work at all. So what now ? Semi-tethered jailbreak is only a protection for you if your device reboots while you were away from your computer, but you will be able to use the most important functions of you iPhone until you get home and connect it with Redsn0w.
