Report: Apple to hold media event on October 4th, Tim Cook to unveil iPhone 5

We have yet to receive official word on this, but All Things Digital is reporting today that Apple's next big media event will be held on October 4th, where freshly minted CEO Tim Cook is expected to unveil the iPhone 5. Sources close to the situation say Cook will be the main presenter at the event, with execs Phil Schiller, Scott Forstall and Eddy Cue playing supporting roles. This would mark the first time that Cook has actually led an Apple event, adding an extra wrinkle of significance to an already highly anticipated occasion. The site's sources went on to say that the next-gen iPhone will be available for purchase "within a few weeks" of the announcement, though All Things Digital acknowledges that the exact date of its unveiling is still subject to change. As always, we'll be sure to keep you posted as soon as we hear more.

PTCL to Charge DSL Customers Rs 1,000 Extra without Notifying Them

Just in case if you didn’t come across a news we publishedabout 50 GB data limit that PTCL applied last month to it’s broadband packages then there are chances that you may be charged Rs. 1,000 extra in current month’s PTCL bill.

You won’t be alone, there would be thousands of other PTCL customers who will come to know about this monthly data limit of 50 GBs only after seeing this month’s bill.

You can thank your service provider, namely PTCL for not notifying you about this additional charging in case if you cross 50 GB monthly limit. In addition you can thank Pakistan Telecommunication Authority for sleeping so tight and for so long now.

Let alone the print ad or TVC to notify its customers, PTCL didn’t bother to even put an update on their website. When called PTCL helpline, a representative apologized for not having this information on website; she said that website will be updated soon but didn’t give any deadline. for obvious reasons.By the way PTCL (or any other ISP) keeps email addresses and phone numbers of all of their customers. So the best way to send an email or personalized text message to all the customers regarding the tariff changes. But they didn’t –

If you still didn’t know, we are here to tell you; last month PTCL applied a data limit of 50 GB for it’s 4,6,8 Mbps packages. Anyone exceeding this limit will have to pay straight Rs. 1,000 extra.

You can get a copy of PTCL bill online here.

Check following table for more details on tariff:
Limited Broadband Packages
(50GB Download)
Unlimited Broadband Packages
4Mbps – Rs. 2000
4Mbps – Rs. 3000
6Mbps – Rs. 5000
6Mbps – Rs. 6000
8Mbps – Rs. 7000
8Mbps – Rs. 8000

  • 1Mbps, 2 Mbps, 10Mbps, 20Mbps and 50 Mbps are still unlimited.
  • Up-mentioned PTCL Broadband rates are applicable since 1st of August, 2011.

PTCL claims to have 668,376 broadband customers in over 1000 cities across Pakistan.

Update:
PTCL has contacted ProPakistani to communicate that they sent out letters and made calls to all customers who were about to reach 50 GB limit to notify them about monthly data limit.

BMW i3 electric and i8 plug-in cars on display at Frankfurt

We've seen 'em as sketches and we've seen 'em having fun on the snow, but now, after getting a fewupgrades, they're parked on the stage at Frankfurt. BMW rolled out its new i3 and i8 electric cars, part of a new sub-brand focused on efficiency and responsive driving -- though it'll ultimately be up to the driver to determine just how responsively these behave on the road.

The i3 is a pure electric, 150km range (about 100 miles) and a very lightweight construction of both aluminum and carbon fiber. The i8, meanwhile, is a plug-in hybrid that is said to deliver about 87MPG and yet still get from 0 - 60MPH in under five seconds. Spunky, then. It also sports those funky laser headlights that are both far more efficient and far more awesome sounding than current LED models. This is what they look like in the flesh, and if all goes according to plan you'll be seeing them for yourselves when they enter production in 2013.

Windows 8 details: new features, UI enhancements and everything in between

Today, Windows Division prexy Steven Sinofsky treated Build 2011 attendees to a walkthrough of the various tweaks, subtle or otherwise, Microsoft's made to Windows 8. Staying true to its roots, the new OS implements the familiar keyboard commands users have become accustomed to over the years -- you know, like CMD and Ctrl+F. And as for its update to Internet Explorer, MS has imbued its tenth iteration with the ability to switch between the much-hyped Metro-style UI and plain old desktop view -- all according to your whimsy. Of course, Redmond's instituted other sweeping changes across the platform, and you can check some of the highlights after the break.

  • All Windows 7 applications will run natively on Windows 8
  • Security update notifications have been minimized to the lower right of the log-in screen
  • Refreshed Windows Task Manager suspends apps when they're not running on-screen
  • New "Reset and Refresh PC" functions enable simplified system wipe and restore
  • HyperV virtualization software comes pre-loaded on Windows 8
  • Multi-monitor support now enables a single background across screens, as well as monitor-specific task bars
  • Multi-touch support enabled for Internet Explorer 10
  • Magnifier function enhanced for desktop manipulation
  • Optional thumb-by-thumb input mode
  • SkyDrive storage support integrated into all cloud-based apps
  • Metro-style refresh for Mail, Photos, Calendar and People apps with Windows Live ID
  • Settings roam allows for preferences to sync across a user's Windows 8 devices
  • Continued update support for Windows 8 Developer Preview Beta
  • Even a Lenovo S10 (first-gen Atom + 1GB of RAM) can "run" Windows 8
  • There's "no overlays" with Windows 8; Metro-style goodness is baked into the core
  • Both Metro-style and conventional Win32 apps will be sold in the Windows Store
  • Windows 8 devices equipped with an NFC chip will be able to use a tap-to-share feature to either send content from one device to another, or simply receive content from something like an NFC-equipped card.
  • Logins will use a photo-based system
  • Apps will be able to natively connect and understand one another (if written as such)
  • Built-in antivirus software will ship in Windows 8
  • There will not be a different edition of Windows 8 for tablets, and presumably, not for Media Centers either
  • It's unclear how many "editions" (Home, Professional, Ultimate, etc.) of Windows 8 there will be
  • ARM devices will be supported, but not in the developer preview

Apple sues Samsung in Japan over alleged iPhone, iPad patent violations

It looks like Apple's patent spat with Samsung has now reached the land of the rising sun. Reuters is reporting that Cupertino is taking the Korean manufacturer to court in Japan, over alleged patent violations pertaining to the iPhone and iPad. Japan's Kyodo news agency first reported the news, citing unnamed insiders who claim that Apple is looking to halt sales of Samsung's allegedly patent-infringing Galaxy S smartphones, while seeking ¥100 million (about $1.3 million) in damages. According to the sources, the first hearing was held in a Tokyo District Court on Wednesday, though a court spokesman would not comment on the pending case. Neither Samsung nor Apple have commented on the suit and details on the patents in question remain unclear, but we'll keep you posted as we find out more.

Update: Ryuji Yamada, CEO of Japanese provider NTT DoCoMo, is now saying that Apple's lawsuit will not have any effect on next month's Galaxy Tab launch. "We have heard from Samsung that there will be  no obstruction to sales," Yamada confirmed.

Your iPhone 4, 3GS, iPod touch 4G, 3G, iPad stuck on Apple Logo After jailbreak 4.3.5 ?

Why your iPhone 4, 3GS iPod touch 4G, 3G, iPad Stuck on Apple Logo After Jailbreak 4.3.5 ?

Stuck on Apple logo problem occurred when you installed tethered jailbreak on your iPhone 4, 3GS. So you have to boot your iPhone 4, 3GS in tethered jailbreak state with Redsn0w.

What is Tethered Jailbreak ?
Tethered jailbreaks are frustrating because they require a computer connection to boot a jailbroken iOS device. The concept of a tethered jailbreak has been around a long time, but essentially it means this: every time your iPhone or iPod touch reboots or the battery dies, you have to connect (tether) your iOS device back to your computer so that the hardware can boot with the aid of the jailbreak application.
What is Untethered jailbreak ?
An untethered jailbreak is the preferred jailbreak because it requires no connection to your computer except for the initial jailbreaking process. You can reboot your iPhone or iPod touch as much as you want without having to tether it to your computer to boot. If the battery dies on a device that has an untethered jailbreak, it’s no big deal you just charge it again and it will boot as usual.

How to fix - iPhone 4, 3GS iPod touch 4G, 3G, iPad Stuck on Apple Logo After Jailbreak 4.3.5 :

Required Downloads :
  • Download Redsn0w (Windows / Mac)
  • Download iOS 4.3.4 - iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad
Steps to fix stuck on Apple logo after jailbreak 4.3.5 :

Step 1: Connect your iPhone, iPod touch or iPad with computer.

Step 2: Run Redsn0w (downloaded above)

Step 3: Point to iOS 4.3.4 and follow instruction with redsn0w and make sure that you select "Just boot tethered right now" option. Don't forget to remove check mark from "Install Cydia". Done !

Note: You have to do this steps every time you reboot your iPhone 4, 3GS, iPod touch 4G, 3G or iPad

Scientists develop the world's smallest single-molecule electric motor

Bigger is certainly not better when it comes to the world's first single-molecule electric engine, which measures in at one nanometer wide -- for perspective, that lash hanging from your left eye is around 60,000 times larger. Single-molecule engines have been used for years, but the new method uses a low-temperature scanning tunneling microscope to power and control the molecule more effectively. In the future, scientists could use the technology for things like lab-on-a-chip devices, miniature medical testing equipment that require a motor to push fluid through tiny pipes. Tufts researchers responsible for the discovery warn that a practical application is still a ways off, but are hopeful that they'll snag aGuinness world record, regardless. After hearing the news, both Pinky and The Brain are feeling entirely more confident about their lifelong goals.

TouchPad mania has been in full effect since the slate went on blue-light special a few weeks ago. Yet, with the future of webOS in flux, crowds have clamored to get Google's green bots on the woebegone tablet. Last week, Team-Touchdroid gave the TouchPad a slice of Gingerbread, and now it's delivered full 10-point multitouch as well. Of course, the video below only shows it doing the trick on a testing app, but it's a good start. Shouldn't be long now before you TouchPad owners can get touchy-feely with any Android app your hearts desire.

White Galaxy S II lands at Vodafone, ignores post-Labor Day etiquette

Summer may have drawn to an unofficial close, but that clearly hasn't stopped the Galaxy S II from wearing all white. Today, the albino version of Samsung's Gingerbread handset officially made its way to Vodafone, just a few days after launching in the UK and more than a month after leaking in "official looking" images. The blanched, 4.3-inch smartphone is available for free with a two-year, £36 per month price plan (roughly equivalent to $58 per month), though it's still unclear whether it'll be making its way stateside anytime soon. If you're looking to brighten up your pocket, you can grab your own at the source link below.
